2D and 3D web icons comparative analysis
Speaking about 3d Icons we should point out that the light source plays an extremely essential role for creating authentic three-dimensional images. It's acceptable and even advisable to use several light sources in web page design today but they should follow fundamental rules of physics and be truthful. A few lights generally make 3D web icons look softer and much more realistic.
Both 2D and 3D icons represent the volume found in the three-dimensional world but use various means of creating this illusion. Certainly the volume can be represented by 3D Icons to more extent than 2D Icons. Among the disadvantages of 2D Icons are flat images that present just one perspective. To this weakness you can also add one more - detailed highlights and imperceptible soft shadows are missing. The shades usage is limited as well.
3D web icons have got all these functions instead. Nevertheless don't forget that 3D is nothing but mathematical replication of the data that however limits its usage. In some case 3D objects like 3D Icons may be successfully replaced by 2D ones or by the videos with the sounds. 3D dimension can be created due to the software used for 3D modeling. It is recommended to depict 3D icons in correlation with the other objects in the neighborhood and the environment they are placed into.
